    Résumé

This study examines the implementation and performance of Scientific Electronic Monitoring (SEM) systems on toothfish longline vessels operating in the CCAMLR Convention Area. SEM systems were introduced to enhance data quality and reduce the workload of scientific observers, who face challenges due to harsh conditions and the physical demands of traditional monitoring methods. The SEM systems tested on the FV Greenstar and FV Marigolds demonstrated effectiveness in automating data collection, improving video quality, and providing insights into fishing activities, but also highlighted ongoing challenges in species identification and data accuracy due to technological and environmental constraints. The results showed that while SEM systems can support observers by collecting essential data, further technological refinements are necessary to fully replace human observation capabilities. The integration of advanced technologies, such as machine-learning-based image analysis and strategic camera placements, could enhance data accuracy and efficiency. Future research should focus on continued development, strategic implementation, and collaboration among scientific communities to ensure that SEM systems meet the complex needs of sustainable fisheries management.
