The results obtained during juvenile surveys in Subarea 48.3 are presented. In the period from 1984 to 1990 AtlantNIRO carried out 6 surveys of that type. 40 fish species from 15 families were found in the juvenile trawl catches. Data are given on young icefishes distribution, length composition, vertical diurnal migrations and young Champsocephalus gunnari by-catches in krill fishery.

Estimates of absolute numbers of recruits to the stock of patagonian toothfish around the Heard Island region are calculated from density at length data derived from stratified trawl surveys. The estimates are referred to the four year-old age class. The parameters for a lognormal recruitment distribution suitable for use in a population model are calculated.

A number of weighted smoothing splines were fit to data on carapace length and size-specific, median chela height of Paralomis formosa. Interactions between longliners, fishing for Patagonian toothfish Dissostichus eleginoides in the west of Kerguelen islands during 1995 - 96 cruise, and marine mammals occured with Kerguelen Fur Seals Arctocephalus gazella. They catch 0.75 % of toothfish on long-lines where interaction occured, but 2.2 % were lost alongside the vessel.

Incidental captures of seabirds were observed during 93/94 to 95/96 longlining fishing campaigns around Kerguelen islands (division 58.5.1). Mean by-catch rate is 0.81 birds / 1.000 hooks.
