Convener’s summary on intersessional activities of the Subgroup for the Implementation of the CCAMLR-2008-IPY-Survey V. Siegel (Convener, Steering Group ‘CCAMLR-2008-IPY-Survey’)
Resumen:
At its last meeting in October 2004 the Scientific Committee agreed that a synoptic acoustic survey in the South Atlantic region would be the most appropriate activity for CCAMLR in the IPY 2008. It was agreed that a synoptic acoustic/net sampling survey in the South Atlantic region should focus on krill but would collect a range of ancillary physical and biological data including Read More

Review of CCAMLR activities on monitoring marine debris in the Convention Area Secretariat
Resumen:
The current status of national surveys on monitoring of marine debris and their impact on marine mammals and seabirds in the Convention Area has been reviewed. The CCAMLR Marine Debris Database contains data from 12 sites, most within Area 48. South Africa submitted data on beached marine debris for the first time from Marion Island (Subarea 58.7). There are 4 sites that have data for more Read More

Fishing equipment, marine debris and hydrocarbon soiling associated with seabirds at Bird Island, South Georgia, 2004/05 Delegation of the United Kingdom
Resumen:
This report describes and quantifies occurrences of fishing gear, marine debris and oil associated with seabirds at Bird Island, South Georgia from 1 April 2004 to 31 March 2005. It is the twelfth such annual report. As in previous years, more items of fishing gear (mostly longlining gear) were found in association with wandering albatrosses than with any other species, although the total Read More

Resumen:
During the fourteenth year of standardised beach surveys of man-made debris at Bird Island, South Georgia, a total of 361 items were collected between April 2003 and March 2004. This represents an increase of 97% on the 183 items recorded in 2002/03 and the highest levels of summer beach debris (232 items) since the 1999/00 season. The total weight of debris collected has also increased by 1. Read More

Entanglement of Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) in man-made debris at Bird Island, South Georgia, during the 2004 winter and 2004/05 breeding season Delegation of the United Kingdom
Resumen:
The number of entanglements in the fifteenth consecutive winter surveyed, decreased by 64% from last year. For the first time since records started in 1990, none of the injuries were classified as severe. The seventeenth consecutive summer (2004/05) of reporting also saw a decrease of 64% compared to last year; the lowest number of entanglements recorded since 1989. As in previous years, most Read More

Beach debris survey Signy Island, South Orkney Islands, 2004/05 Delegation of the United Kingdom
Resumen:
During the 2004/05 austral summer the fifteenth annual beach debris survey was carried out at Signy Island, South Orkney Islands. Debris was cleared each month between December and March from the three study beaches. The debris was counted, measured and classified by type, material, mass and size categories. A total of 38 items weighing 10.95kg were collected. The number of items found was Read More

Entanglement of Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) in man-made debris at Signy Island, South Orkney Islands, 2004/05 Delegation of the United Kingdom
Resumen:
The results of the ninth annual survey of entanglement of Antarctic fur seals at Signy Island, South Orkney Islands are reported for the 2004/05 summer season. There were two sightings of seals wearing neck collars of man-made debris, both were sub-adult males entangled with fishing net. In one case the entangling material had become attached to a rock and the animal was tethered to the ground Read More

Scientific justification for a marine protected area designation around the Balleny Islands to protect ecosystem structure and function in the Ross Sea region, Antarctica: progress report Delegation of New Zealand
Resumen:
In 2000, the New Zealand delegation to CCAMLR proposed the designation of an Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA) around the Balleny Islands. Since that time, research has continued to focus on the value of the area on and around the Balleny Islands, and the potential benefits of establishing a Balleny Islands Marine Protected Area (MPA). The ecological importance of the Balleny Islands Read More

A proposal for streamlining the work of the Scientific Committee for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources Delegation of Australia
Resumen:
The work of the Scientific Committee is expanding with a duplication of many functions in the two working groups and subgroups. There is also a need to give time to emerging issues for which there is insufficient time at present in the existing working groups, such as consideration of marine protected areas in a CCAMLR context and the development and evaluation of management strategies for Read More

Fisheries in the Southern Ocean – an ecosystem approach. Trans. Roy. Soc. Lond. (in press) Kock, K.-H., K. Reid, J. Croxall and S. Nicol
Resumen:
The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) is bound by its Article II, 3 to follow an ecosystem approach to management. This approach has been extended to the application of a precautionary approach in the late 1980’s. In our review we deal primarily with the science–related aspects of CCAMLR and its development towards an ecosystem approach to the Read More
