    Abstract

The author reviewed the issues in relation to the implementation of the multi-vessels research programs in ’data limited toothfish fisheries to which 58.4.1 applies.

The Russian side maintains its position that standardization of fishing gear is a critical factors of toothfish research fishing for its efficiency and reliability in the context of providing scientific-based data for understanding abundance, population structure, distribution of toothfish and dependent species, according to the objectives and goals of the research program provided in CCAMLR Area.

There is no sufficient scientific justification accepted by the Scientific Committee to allow ignoring the inherent requirements of international practice for the implementation of research programs using standardized fishing gear.

Furthermore, the use of standardized gear will be consistent with the objectives of the research plan for data-poor fisheries such as area 58.4.1 and will be consistent with conservation measures in place, contributing to the achievement of Article II of the Convention.
