    Abstract

The revised krill fishery management approach (KFMA) is crucial for ensuring sustainable practices in Subarea 48.1. This document summarizes the currents status of the KFMA and identifies some outstanding tasks. This is by no means a complete list but aims to foster constructive discussions within the Ecosystem Monitoring and Management Working Group (EMM), clarifying roles and responsibilities.

There are still challenges in the development concerning scientific methodologies that remain for successful implementation, but these are within reach. A key opportunity lies in harmonizing the KFMA with the Domain 1 Marine Protected Area (D1MPA), leveraging their spatial and temporal protection elements. Clear delineation of responsibilities, costs, and tasks is essential for the successful realization of KFMA in Subarea 48.1. While many tasks can be addressed at the scientific working group level, significant issues will require decisions by the Commission. Additionally, we also emphasize the necessity of modifying existing Conservation Measure 51-01 and establishing a distinct Conservation Measure tailored to Subarea 48.1 only, facilitating a timely transition to a revised KFMA.
