This paper presents the outputs of a two-day informal workshop held in Cefas (UK) to bring together stock assessors and Management Strategy Evaluation (MSE) experts to address the CCAMLR Workplan.
The workshop proposed that for the Subarea 48.3 toothfish assessment, the highest priorities to investigate within the MSE framework would be mis-estimation of natural mortality and trends in recruitment.
The workshop noted that the MSEs could be conducted using Casal2 or FLR as an operating model, with Casal2 providing efficiencies by allowing the existing assessments to be used as the basis for the operating model. Using FLR would potentially allow flexibility to explore alternative structural uncertainty, but would require substantial amounts of work to develop a tag-recapture module and interfaces between Casal2 and FLR. For the estimation model, approximation of assessment uncertainty and an approximate implementation of the Decision Rule may be needed in order to implement the MSE in the available timescale.
