Krill catches and consumption by land-based predators in relation to distance from colonies of penguins and seals in the South Shetlands and South Orkneys Secretariat
Abstract:
Zones of 20 km width are defined around selected colonies of penguins distributed around the coasts of the South Shetland and South Orkney Islands. Krill catches in these zones are shown to have a consistent pattern in Subarea 48.1 but an unpredictable distribution in Subarea 48.2, probably as a result of oceanographic conditions. About 50% of the catch in Subarea 48.1 from December to March Read More

Contributions to the biology of cephalopods in Prydz Bay, Antarctica - a preliminary report Delegation of Australia
Abstract:
The Australian Antarctic Division carried out an extensive sampling program for pelagic and benthic fauna in Prydz Bay, Antarctica (Indian Ocean Sector) in January to March, 1991.
A total of 341 cephalopod specimens comprising 256 squids and 85 octopods were captured for study.
This preliminary report presents capture records of eight species of squids; Brachioteuthis sp., Read More

Data on krill, Euphausia superba Dana, consumption by coastal fishes in Division 58.4.2 (Kosmonavtov and Sodruzhestva Seas) Delegation of USSR
Abstract:
Basing on the materials of complex study of the Kosmonavtov and Sodruzhestva Seas ecosystems, draft calculations were done to determine the E.superba consumption by near-bottom - pelagic fishes as its main consumers in the above areas.
According to the data of trawlings in the depth range of 100-500 m in the area between 30 and 80°E, the total fish stock was evaluated to be 551.300 t. Read More

Reproduction in Antarctic notothenioid fish - a review Delegation of Germany
Abstract:
Abstract: Gonad maturation in Antarctic notothenioid fish is a biennial process although spawning is likely to take place annually. However, part of the populations of Champsocephalus gunnari in the Atlantic Ocean sector do not spawn each year. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) of females is 15–40% at spawning. Apart from a few nototheniid species the GSI of males is much less and typi6dlly only 15–20 Read More

The state of exploited fish stocks in the Southern Ocean - a review Delegation of Germany
Abstract:
Antarctic finfish resources have been subject to exploitation primarily by the Soviet Union since more than 20 years. The total yield from the Southern Ocean has been 2.85 million tonnes until the season 1989/90. About two thirds of the catches have been taken in the Atlantic Ocean sector (mainly South Georgia) while the remaining one third originated primarily from the Kerguelen waters in the Read More

Incidental mortality arising from fisheries activities around Kerguelen Island (Division 58.5.1) Delegation of France
Abstract:
Causes of incidental mortality owing to fisheries activities around Kerguelen (Division 58.5.1) have been identified. The most significant mortality has been noted during directed trawling for Champsocephalus gunnari on the Kerguelen shelf. This is caused by the electrical cable linking the trawler to the trawl (Netsonde system), which mainly affects black-browed albatrosses (Diomedea Read More

The incidence of plastic in the diets of Antarctic seabirds Delegation of USA
Abstract:
We investigated the diets of seabirds at sea in the Antarctic from 1976 to 1988. During the study period, on eight cruises in the Ross, southern Scotia, and Weddell Seas and Drake Passage, we collected or pumped the stomachs of 1,223 seabirds of 23 species. The stomach contents of species that feed below the sea surface contained little plastic, as expected; these birds live entirely on live Read More
