    Abstract

The SAGO EXTREME system emerges in 2016 as a new concept to reduce the marine mammal depredation on bottom longline fisheries. Been installed on the Uruguayan FV Ocean Azul equipped with an auto line fishing gear has been proved and developed since 2020 on toothfish fisheries. The SAGO EXTREME system has evolved with a new lunch procedure that eliminates the contact of the SAGO capsule with the seafloor. Its recovery maneuver is safer and the catch discharge facilitated. This was achieved with the incorporation of a new element the SAGO EXTREME PLATFORM at the moon pool. The launch and recovery of the capsule using the platform increases the system versatility while facilitating its incorporation into other fishing units. On this paper the new launching and recovery maneuver implemented on the Uruguayan FV Ocean Azul is described, the implications of the upgrade in the SAGO EXTREME system and the main research needs for understanding its impact on marine mammal depredation over the fishing gear are mentioned.
