Throughout the development of the proposal for the Domain 1 Marine Protected Area (D1MPA), the priority has been to use mechanisms to maintain an open, collaborative, and transparent process. For over a decade, the proponents of D1MPA engaged in iterative work with stakeholders, making modifications to the proposal based on their inputs. From 2017 to present, the proposal has been continuously modified in response to technical concerns from Members and the fishing industry, demonstrating the willingness of both the proponents to incorporate the voices of all stakeholders in safeguarding biodiversity and the rational use of resources in Domain 1. Since the presentation of the D1MPA proposal an updated review of the literature has been produced, including novel scientific information highlighting the ongoing environmental changes that continue to stress habitats and ecosystems in CCAMLR Domain 1. Additionally, since 2021, progress has been made in mapping research efforts and potentials in Domain 1, laying the foundation for the development of the Research and Monitoring Plan for the D1MPA proposal (D1MPA RMP). These initiatives underscore the importance of an open and collaborative process as a key tool in advancing CCAMLR's goal of establishing a representative system of MPAs, as agreed by its members. In addition, in the context of the revision of Conservation Measure 51-07 the adoption of D1MPA can contribute to aiding the krill fishing management strategy. In the context of climate change and escalating human activities, D1MPA is proposed as a viable solution for addressing conservation, in alignment with Article II of the Convention. This approach seeks to encompass and prioritize the interests of all Member states.
